In this detailed guide, I‘ll show you exactly how to open the Ancient Zaqali Chest in the new World of Warcraft: Dragonflight expansion, step-by-step. Introduction to Dragonflight and Zaralek Cavern
Before jumping into the chest guide, let me give you a quick overview of Dragonflight and Zaralek Cavern for some context.
Dragonflight is the 9th expansion for the epic MMORPG World of Warcraft, transporting us to the previously hidden Dragon Isles. Here, you can restore lost powers of the ancient dragonflights, explore new zones, take on enemies like the corrupted Black Dragonflight, and more.
One of the new level 70 zones is Zaqali Caldera, home to the 5-boss Zaralek Cavern raid. Inside this fiery cavern, you‘ll encounter baddies like the final boss Echo of Neltharion.
Defeating the enemies in Zaralek Cavern lets you collect new armor sets, unlock special class bonuses, and gain higher item level gear upgrades.
Which brings us to the Ancient Zaqali Chest…
Finding the Location of the Ancient Chest
The Ancient Zaqali Chest is tucked away inside a cave at coordinates 36.44, 48.18 in Zaqali Caldera.
To get there:
- Use your fancy new dragonriding mount to fly over to Zaqali Caldera
- Head to the cave entrance at the coordinates above
- Go down the ramp into the cave – watch out for enemies!
- The Ancient Chest is located inside the first chamber near the entrance
You can‘t miss the chest – it‘s a massive golden chest glowing and crackling with orange fiery runes. Very mystical, but also very locked!
Now let‘s get into how to actually open this bad boy…
Unlocking Step 1: Bottled Magma
Based on my own experience and talking to other WoW experts, the first step is finding a special item called Bottled Magma. This allows you to unlock the chest.
Bottled Magma is a sparkling glass bottle filled with bubbling orange lava that spawns around Zaqali Caldera. You need to track one down and bring it to the chest.
Here are some tips for obtaining your Bottled Magma:
- One spawn point is right outside the chest‘s cave – check there first!
- But spawns are random, so keep hunting if not there – look near dig sites, veins, corpses etc.
- Each player needs their own magma bottle – no sharing!
- Bottled Magma respawns quickly after being looted.
- Use an addon like HandyNotes to mark the spawn points.
Once you‘ve finally got your Bottled Magma, head to the chest and use the item. This splashes molten lava all over the chest, causing the orange runes to disappear.
Phew, first step done! But we still can‘t open it…
Unlocking Step 2: Defeating Nearby Enemies
Even after the magma, the chest remains stubbornly sealed. This stumped me at first too.
It turns out there are invisible seals that also need removing by defeating certain enemies around the chest.
Based on community data mining the game files, you need to kill:
- 3 Zaqali Magma Giants
- 3 Zaqlani Flamecallers
- 3 Zaqali Firestarters
This breaks the invisible seals and fully unlocks the chest.
I recommend clearing out the entire cave entrance area to be safe. Focus fire to quickly burn down giants, flamecallers, and firestarters as they spawn. Crowd control helps too – I like to polymorph the humanoid casters.
Keep defeating them until you see the chest make a sparkling sound and can finally click it open. Teamwork makes the dream work!
Looting the Epic Treasures Inside
Woo, now the moment we‘ve been waiting for – loot time! Inside the Ancient Zaqali Chest, you‘ll find a bunch of awesome goodies:
- Gear, weapons, trinkets (item level based on your current gear)
- Crafting materials like primal spherules, ore, gems
- Dragon Isles consumables such as feasts and potions
- Cosmetic appearances like pets and mounts
- And much more!
The chest loot is personal, so distribute it fairly. The items really give your gear a boost at this stage in Dragonflight progression.
All that effort pays off when you get your hands on the sweet, sweet loot!
