First up, what‘s the big deal with UEFI anyway? Well, while clunky old Legacy BIOS got us by for decades, it‘s really showing its age. UEFI offers a modern reboot (pun intended) that can breathe new life into older computers.
According to Microsoft research, over 60% of Windows 10 users are still running Legacy BIOS systems. That means they‘re missing out on faster boot ups. We‘re talking 20+ second improvements for cold starts! Who doesn‘t love getting to web browsing and gaming quicker?
UEFI also supports larger hard drives beyond the 2.1TB limit of Legacy BIOS. With game install sizes ballooning, you‘ll want all the wiggle room you can get. Giant 50GB+ downloads for the latest Call of Duty or Forza Horizon will barely make a dent.
And don‘t get me started on the clunky text-based interface of Legacy BIOS. I‘ve always hated squinting at those tiny letters! The UEFI implementation has a graphical interface reminiscent of a smartphone app. Navigation is smooth as butter by comparison.
So UEFI has appealing benefits, but what‘s involved in actually switching from Legacy? Grab some coffee and let me walk you through it step-by-step.
Confirming You‘re Currently Using Legacy BIOS
Before changing, we need to verify you‘re still on Legacy. There are a couple quick checks you can run:
1. Open System Information
Type "System Information" into the search bar and look under the BIOS Mode field. If it says "Legacy," you have confirmation.
2. Check Disk Management
Hit Windows+R and type "diskmgmt.msc" then look under Volumes. If the Partition Style says "Master Boot Record (MBR)," Legacy mode is enabled.

Now for the fun part – converting the disk partition scheme from MBR to GPT. The newer GPT style is required for UEFI.
Luckily, Windows 10‘s MBR2GPT tool makes this a cinch. No third party software required! It‘s been included since the 1703 update, so as long as you‘re up to date, MBR2GPT is at your disposal.
Let‘s open an Administrator command prompt and start the conversion.
I like to use the keyboard shortcut Windows+X and select "Windows Terminal (Admin)" but you can also search for cmd, right-click it, and open as admin.
With admin privileges enabled, enter the following:
mbr2gpt /validate /allowFullOS
This detects and verifies all your disk volumes can be properly converted to GPT. If you get a successful validation message, you‘re good to proceed.
Sometimes the validation fails due to recovery partitions or other disk oddities. Don‘t worry though! Microsoft has some great troubleshooting guidance to address these scenarios. We‘ll get you converted with a bit of BIOS tweaking.
Ready for the actual conversion? Now run:
mbr2gpt /convert /allowFullOS
You‘ll see the conversion take place, usually finishing in under a minute. I always cross my fingers that Windows doesn‘t decide to reboot mid-process!
With MBR converted to GPT, your BIOS mode will now show UEFI in System Information. The Disk Management tool will also list GPT as the partition style.
MBR2GPT creates a small 100 MB "EFI system partition" on your main drive too. This houses UEFI boot files. The partition it carves out does slightly reduce the size of your main one.
Flipping the UEFI Switch in Your Computer‘s BIOS
Okay, in theory your computer now has a GPT disk ready for UEFI mode. But one final step remains – you need to enable UEFI boot in your BIOS settings.
Every BIOS has slightly different menus and options. You‘ll need to enter Setup, often by pressing F2, Delete, or F10 on initial startup. Poke around for Boot, Startup, or Boot Order settings and look for:
- An option to enable UEFI Boot
- Disabling CSM (Compatibility Support Module) or Legacy Boot modes
The specifics will vary across Dell, HP, Acer, ASUS, etc. Based on my experience though, the settings should look something like this:

To UEFI or Not To UEFI?
