Fear & Hunger is a ruthlessly challenging survival horror RPG that throws unprepared players into a disturbingly dark and unforgiving world. With its oppressive atmosphere, unnerving encounters, and permanent consequences, it can be an intimidating game for newcomers. This comprehensive walkthrough guide aims to help players successfully navigate the early areas of Fear & Hunger and establish a solid foundation for surviving its many horrors.
As a long-time hardcore gaming and streaming enthusiast, I‘ve managed to scrape by in Fear & Hunger‘s merciless world through multiple tense playthroughs. Take my advice and experience to heart, and maybe you‘ll manage to cling to your sanity just a bit longer in this twisted realm. Fear & Hunger doesn‘t pull its punches, but we technology geeks know that knowledge is power. So let‘s dig in!
Getting Started as a Fresh Victim
When first creating your character, pay very close attention to the randomized phobia they are assigned. These force harsh game-long debuffs against certain enemy types and can significantly punish you. Through numerous rerolls in my experiments, I‘ve concluded that erotophobia is highly crippling since many common early foes rely on attacks from their intimate body parts. If you‘re patient enough to fish for a better phobia, try aiming for either phasmophobia or necrophobia since those enemy types are much rarer.
You begin the game with three key resource bars that act as soft time limits, pressuring you to move promptly from zone to zone:
- Hunger: Feeding reduces max HP when depleted. Just 1 stack of the Hungry debuff halves your damage.
- Mind: Represents your character‘s sanity. Allows companions to abandon you when drained. Also used to cast spells.
- Body: Your health pool. Healing items are scarce, so use them carefully.
Try to avoid full depletion on any of them. But letting them dip into the yellow zones during exploration can be fine. Just make sure you recover before major battles or challenges. Now let‘s walk through the starting zones and how to tackle them as a fresh victim.
The Fields of Despair
Upon starting, loot every single container and barrel scattered around the open fields. Be wary of the distant barking dogs if playing on higher difficulties. If they manage to reach your position, it‘s nearly a death sentence. Flee immediately if engaged even briefly – they deal heavy damage and lethal status effects while providing zero loot.
Once you‘ve cleaned out the starting area, you have two paths: west to the basement, or north to the main castle entrance. West is safer thanks to avoiding the pursuing dogs. Take that route first on higher difficulties. The dogs won‘t follow you downstairs.
The Basement of Wretched Souls
This area introduces the Manebas – jellyfish-like creatures that inflict parasitic worms, doubling your hunger drain until cured. Avoid them at all costs for now. Lure them away from loot piles using their slow movement and patterns.
Make sure to thoroughly search for the guaranteed Small Key inside the armory chest. This helps unlock doors based on your character‘s skills. I‘ve mapped out the deadliest Maneba patrol routes along the critical path based on countless delves. Refer to my basement map below to safely collect all worthwhile loot:
[BASEMENT MAP]If the dreamlike zone appears, rush through consecutive doors heading straight until you reach the light. This returns you safely to reality. Lingering too long triggers an unavoidable deadly boss fight at this stage. Once the basement is cleared, proceed upstairs to the graveyard.
The Silent Graveyard
This area seems peaceful but hides lethal dangers for the unprepared. Use torches in darkened areas of the graveyard to uncover hidden loot. However, keep a wide berth around the central ghost – he will violently destroy you in direct combat at this stage.
Make sure to visit the wounded knight near the mausoleums for guaranteed loot. Afterward, head north to reach the prisons. Tread cautiously – Failure means certain doom.
The Prisons of Despair
This labyrinthine zone hides some of the deadliest threats yet. Watch each step carefully to avoid lethal nail traps hidden on the floor, which cause bleeding and infections. Also avoid suspicious wall holes that fire deadly arrow volleys.
However, the prison guards themselves can be safely farmed once you learn their patterns. Always sever their knife arm first to neutralize their main threat. Then guard against their slap flurry combo. Remove their genitals to fully neutralize them, then strike the torso repeatedly until dead. Repeat this tried and true tactic on every guard encountered to collect worthwhile loot. Just stay focused!
When prompted about the torturer from the shadows, you have two choices that diverge the gameplay path:
- Ambush and kill him to rescue his imprisoned victim. This puts you on the "good" path.
- Hide and betray him to gain access to the cursed Penance armor. The "evil" path for greater power.
Based on my experiments, the Penance armor has significant tradeoffs and risks that may not be worth it. The marriage ritual later on can be a safer alternative bonus. But it‘s up to you to decide your character‘s moral compass in this bleak world.
After dealing with the torturer, pass through the bloody meat tunnels quickly. Do NOT interact with the meat god encounter. Flee immediately if accidentally triggered. Once unlocked, ride the elevator down to reach the next area.
The Treacherous Mines
This zone opens up more terrain to explore but is still filled with deadly threats. Tread carefully and use hit-and-run attack strategies on foes. The pickaxe found here allows you to mine gems which can be traded for useful gear. Locate Moonless near the bottom to fill glowing vials with a substance that restores huge amounts of hunger.
The cultist ritual grounds in the mines offer limited sources of free healing and hunger restoration. But participating carries addiction risks. I‘d recommend saving your game before interacting, then reloading if you get unlucky with the coin flip consequences. The prisoner cells down here can also contain potential new companions to recruit – explore thoroughly!
Once you‘ve grown strong enough to brave the dangers, return to previous zones and fully explore side paths. Seek out rare skill books, gear upgrade recipes, and other permanent power-ups. Defeating more prison guards can provide reliable loot to boost your arsenal. Carefully manage light sources, supplies, and health when delving. Know when to retreat back to safer areas for regrouping. Patience and preparation are absolutely vital to have any hope of pushing back the darkness in Fear & Hunger.
Character Creation Tips from a Survival Veteran
Based on painful trial and error across multiple playthroughs, here are my character creation tips for newcomers:
Mercenary/Cahara
- Excellent starter choice with fleeing bonuses
- Prioritize lockpicking and dash skills out the gate
- Hit and run tactics work very well
Knight/D‘arce
- Solid tank but slower growth in early game
- Focus on dash skill and fast stance for dodging
- Consider recruiting after Cahara to support
Dark Priest/Enki
- Powerful mage but very challenging start
- Rush dash skill and affinity for damage spells
- Better saved as a later game recruit
Outlander/Ragnvaldr
- Bow offers ranged safety but mediocre overall
- Devour and dash help offset early hunger issues
- Another candidate for later recruiting over main
