For newcomers, DMZ is a sandbox-style multiplayer mode where you battle enemy Operators and AI combatants.

The goal is to complete missions, loot supplies, and extract valuables for cash to improve your loadout. This loop of looting, surviving and escaping Al Mazrah continues across multiple raids.

There’s no single victory condition – the aim is to build up your Operator over time. Unlocking new loadout slots, weapons and gear is key to survival.

The Forward Operating Base (FOB) is your HQ to redeem cash for upgrades like extra armor plates, inventory space and killstreaks.

Joining one of three launch factions by speaking to operators at the FOB allows progressing through ranks via missions.

Higher faction ranks grant access to rare weapon blueprints, XP boosts, contraband weapons and more.

Overview of the Factions

Here‘s a quick overview of the 3 launch factions in DMZ and their notable unlocks:

White Lotus – This faction offers sniper rifles, long-range blueprints and stealth rewards. Reaching Tier 1 Rank 5 unlocks the Signal 50 – a powerful semi-auto anti-material sniper.

Legion Security – With a focus on assault rifles and medium-long range engagements, this faction provides weapon versatility and armor bonuses. The M13B assault rifle unlocks at Tier 1 Rank 5.

Black Mause – The CQB focused choice, with SMGs, shotguns and skills for close quarters dominance. Rank 5 unlocks the exclusive BAS-P SMG, regarded as one of the best exfiltration weapons.

As you can see, each faction has unique weapon and gear rewards for their playstyle. Let‘s focus now on the Black Mause‘s Researcher Notes mission.

Importance of the Researcher’s Notes

Collecting the Researcher’s Notes from the Veterinary Office is a Tier 2 Black Mause mission available at Rank 4.

Reaching Tier 2 is important since these missions award the most XP to gain additional Black Mause ranks.

At Rank 5, you unlock the strongest rewards like the devastating BAS-P SMG or armor piercing ammunition. Tier 2 and 3 also provide the most cash payouts, reaching $30,000 or more per mission.

The notes also directly reward a Blueprint for the Kastov-74u called the “Mouth Breather” which has a wrapped silencer plus handling bonuses.

Finally, completing Tier 2 missions unlocks powerful new upgrades at your FOB like 3 Armor Plates for improved survivability.

Step 1 – Obtain the Veterinarian Key and Stronghold Key

To enter the Veterinary Office, you need two keys – the Veterinarian Key and Stronghold Key.

Veterinarian Key

This unlocks the Office doors. It‘s obtained via the Tier 2 “Destroy Enemy Anti-Air Equipment” mission available at Rank 4 of the Black Mause.

• Chance to obtain: 100%

Or rarely found in Supply Boxes or High Value Target drops:

• Supply Box chance: ~1%
• HVT Contract chance: ~2-3%

Stronghold Key

This opens certain locked stronghold areas. It drops randomly from eliminating the mini boss “The Chemist” or Supply Boxes.

• The Chemist chance: ~10%
• Supply Box chance: ~3%

With both these keys, you can access the locked Veterinary Office. Let‘s move onto location.

Step 2 – Navigating to the Veterinary Office

The Veterinary Office is located in the southwestern part of the large Vondel Zoo area, marked D7 on your Tac Map.

Here it is highlighted:

This is deep in Black Mause territory but also crawling with lethal AI enemies like:

• Armored Juggernauts with mini-guns
• Snipers with long sight lines
• Heavy gunners pinning you down
• CQB assaults flanking your position

I‘d recommend a suppressed mid-range Black Mause loadout like the:

• RPK LMG or Kastov 762 AR
• P890 or PDSW pistol sidearm
• Heartbeat Sensor to track targets
• Stim for rapid healing and a Gas Grenade for area denial

Move quietly between cover while clearing enemies silently to avoid unwanted aggro. Conservatively use your limited suppression tools as they can attract more combatants when they expire.

Approaching from the north lets you use the mountain ridge as cover while you elimination threats. The area also has pockets of dangerous radiation, so bring a radiation shot to avoid health deterioration.

Once inside the Zoo, navigate to the Veterinary Office adjacent to the Reptile House, as marked earlier. Use your Stronghold Key to access the locked entrance.

Step 3 – Locate and Extract the Researcher‘s Notes

You’re almost there! Inside the Office, locate a locked door with the prompt to use your Veterinarian Key.

Interact to unlock it and enter the office space. You should see a desk with a yellow Research Documents folder – these are the Researcher’s Notes!

Walk up and press the button prompt to stow the notes in your backpack. The Tier 2 Faction Mission will now display as complete in your Missions menu.

Safely Extracting with the Notes

You‘ve secured the goods, but your job isn‘t done until you successfully extract from Al Mazrah with the notes.

The Zoo area is swarming with enemies between you and the nearest extraction point. Here are some tips to escape with your life:

• Use smoke grenades to conceal your movements
• Have a squadmate provide sniper overwatch
• Call in an armored transport for safe extraction under heavy fire
• Avoid sprinting which shows up on mini-maps
• Toss decoys in the opposite direction before moving
• Drop any excess cash to not lose big if you die
• Equip Cold Blooded to counter AI target detection

If you extracted smoothly, return to the FOB to bank that sweet cash payout. Speak with Von Stocken to turn in the mission and unlock your rewards!

Rewards for Finding the Researcher‘s Notes

So what do you get for braving the Zoo and securing the notes? Here are the mission completion rewards:

• 4000 Black Mause XP
• $15,000 Cash
• Kastov-74u ‘Mouth Breather‘ Blueprint
