How to Get to Alfornada Gym in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet – A Detailed Guide for Fellow Trainers

Hey friend! Having trouble reaching the 4th gym in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet? You‘re not alone. Many trainers struggle to access Alfornada Gym and its psychic-type leader Iono without the climbing ability.

Not to worry – with this guide, we‘ll explore multiple routes to the gym so you can continue your Paldea journey. I‘ll provide detailed directions, tips for the gym battles, and advice on training in the surrounding areas. Let‘s dive in!

Overview of Alfornada Gym

First, some background. Alfornada Gym specializes in psychic-type Pokemon, like many previous gyms including Tate and Liza from Ruby/Sapphire. Defeating Iono here is crucial for getting the Psychic Badge which enables you to challenge the remaining gyms.

Her pokemon are fast and hit hard with special attacks. According to testing, her Musharna‘s Psybeam can deal over 60% damage to an unprepared mon! So bringing dark, ghost, or bug-types that resist these moves is definitely recommended.

Now, the tricky part – getting to the gym. The cave leading directly there is blocked by cliffs until you get the climbing ability from beating False Dragon Titan. So we‘ll need to take alternate routes for now.

Detailed Route Guide to Alfornada Gym

Let me walk you through how to access the gym step-by-step:

Route via West Paldean Sea

  1. Begin at the Pokemon Center in West Province (Area Two)
  2. Head east, staying close to the coastline
  3. After about 5 minutes, you‘ll come across a fisherman near a rocky outcropping
  4. Keep following the path around the outcropping and through the grass
  5. Pass the large rock formation on your right to find some stones and shrubs
  6. Go left up the hill and continue east around 15 more minutes
  7. You‘ll pass two Ace Trainers battling in a clearing
  8. Exit the other side of the clearing and approach the cliff edge
  9. Carefully jump off the low cliff here onto the sandy path below
  10. Follow this path as it curves left, with the sea on your right
  11. You‘ll go under a stone archway and arrive at the entrance to Alfornada Gym!

This scenic route takes around 25-30 minutes, letting you enjoy the Paldean coastline and prep your team along the way. Battling the Ace Trainers is great training before facing Iono. Now let‘s look at an alternate option.

Route via Flying Pokemon

If you have a flying Pokemon or HM Fly, here is a quicker route:

  1. Start from Cascarrafa city, which has a Pokemon Center
  2. Fly east across the mountains to reach Alfornada Gym
  3. Or, fly to the lighthouse west of the gym then walk east 5 minutes
  4. You can land right in front of the gym!

This route only takes about 5 minutes if you can fly or have Jet Balloons. I‘d also recommend visiting the lighthouse first to catch electric and water types super effective against Iono like Luxio.

Alternate Routes

As you explore Paldea, try getting creative with your routes too! Here are some more possibilities:

  • Swim east along the coast using HM Surf
  • Climb the cliffs north of the gym once you have climbing ability
  • Ride Koraidon/Miraidon over the mountain and sea obstacles
  • Unlock the secret cave under the lighthouse with dive and go through it
  • Take the tunnel from Artazon once it‘s unlocked later in the story

Think outside the box and have fun discovering new ways to get around! The world is so open.

Preparing Your Team to Defeat Alfornada Gym

Once you‘ve reached the gym, you‘ll need a solid strategy to take down Iono. Here are my top tips for preparing your team:

  • Bring at least one dark, ghost, or bug type – These resist Iono‘s psychic moves and can deal super effective STAB damage back. Some great options are Grafaiai, Mimikyu, Umbreon, or Annihilape.
  • Teach a hard-hitting physical move – Since psychic pokemon tend to have lower physical defense, a strong physical attack like Lunge or Throat Chop can one-shot them.
  • Use status moves – Burning, poisoning, or paralyzing Iono‘s fast pokemon helps slow them down and wears down their health over time. I suggest having Toxic or Will-O-Wisp.
  • Setup entry hazards like Stealth Rock to chip away at her team on switch ins. Other field conditions like Trick Room or Tailwind can help too.
  • Make sure to heal and check held items before challenging the gym. Berries that cure status, Leftovers recovery, and type-boosting items really help!

Here‘s an example team with coverage of her weaknesses:

Pokemon Type Moves
Umbreon Dark Foul Play, Moonlight, Toxic, Protect
Vivillon Bug/Flying Bug Buzz, Hurricane, Quiver Dance, Sleep Powder
Cloyster Water/Ice Icicle Spear, Rock Blast, Shell Smash, Aqua Jet
Reuniclus Psychic Trick Room, Psychic, Shadow Ball, Calm Mind

With matching types, healing moves, and boosting setups, a team like this has all you need to counter Iono strategically. Now let‘s look at her pokemon‘s strengths and weaknesses:

Iono‘s Team Analysis

Here are the pokemon Iono can use against you:

Pokemon Type Key Stats and Moves Weaknesses
Orthworm Bug High speed, Silver Wind Fire, Flying, Rock
Musharna Psychic Bulk, Psybeam Dark, Ghost, Bug
Wobbuffet Psychic Counter mirror moves Dark, Ghost
Bellibolt Electric Special attack, Thunderbolt Ground

So bring your Umbreons and Volcaronas! Be ready to take special hits and dish back physical attacks against their weaker defense. With the right counters, you‘ll be ready to take on the gym.

Exploring Alfornada‘s Surrounding Areas

While you‘re in the area, make sure to explore and prepare your team! Here are some great spots:

The Lighthouse

West of the gym, the lighthouse has tons of electric types like Magneton and Luxio. There‘s also water pokemon like Wingull in the area. It‘s fantastic for training against Iono and a key Fly point. At night, evolve your Eevee into Umbreon here!

Psychic Boss Hideout

North of the gym, defeat the Psychic-type Team Star crew to get great experience. They also give out TMs for Psychic, Calm Mind and more – perfect for the gym battles!

West Paldean Sea

Searching the islands and waters here can uncover rare pokemon like Lapras. And use Surf to access new areas or find useful items likePearls.

With thorough preparation, your in-game team and real-life strategies will be primed to take on Alfornada Gym. Now go show Iono what you‘re made of!

Let me know if you have any other questions. I‘m always happy to help a fellow Pokemon trainer conquer the gyms of Paldea. We got this!
