How to Catch the Elusive Giant Glimmerfish Before It‘s Gone in WoW Dragonflight

Have you tried fishing up the Giant Glimmerfish in Dragonflight only to have it disappear into the lava before you can fill your scale meter? Don‘t worry, you‘re not alone. Many WoW players have struggled with this tricky time-limited quest.

But with the right strategy, gear and little luck, you can reel in this rare catch for awesome rewards before it‘s gone for good!

In this guide, we‘ll give you all the tips and info you need to successfully snag the Glimmerfish as an experienced WoW player and self-proclaimed fantasy gaming geek. Time to gear up and get fishing, my friend!

An Overview of the Glimmerfish Before It‘s Gone Quest

Let‘s start with a quick rundown of the quest itself for those who haven‘t tried it yet.

The Glimmerfish quest becomes available after completing the "Secrets in the Depths" campaign quest in Dragonflight. This unlocks the Zaralek Cavern dungeon, where the giant fish hangs out.

Inside the cavern, you‘ll spot the massive Glimmerfish swimming along the rivers of molten lava that wind through the chambers. Interact with the fish once to begin the quest.

Your goal is to collect Glimmerfish Scales by attacking and damaging the fish as it swims along its set path. It will drop scales that you need to pick up to fill the "Scales Collected" meter before the fish finishes its loop.

If you fill the meter in time, you‘ll get a special reward satchel. But fail, and the fish will vanish into the lava forever! Not exactly a mundane fishing trip.

Now for the bad news…this quest is known to be super buggy. The fish often fails to spawn properly or disappears randomly due to phasing issues on many servers. Definitely not ideal.

But not to worry! In this guide, we‘ll cover all the tips and tricks from our own testing and the WoW theorycrafting community to help you catch this elusive fish. Let‘s get to it!

Optimal Location to Engage the First Glimmerfish Spawn

The Giant Glimmerfish first emerges at coordinates 46.4, 86.8 in Zaralek Cavern according to the dungeon journal and confirmed by many players on the test realms.

This is along the lava river bank shortly after the "Titanic Defenses" boss encounter. The fish spawns from behind a rocky outcrop and begins swimming downstream along the molten river.

Through extensive exploration on the PTR realms, I found the most reliable way to engage that very first spawn is to enter Zaralek Cavern through the southern entrance at 45.2, 94.6.

Then immediately fly upstream while hugging the left wall. Stay high enough to see over the rocky outcrops until you reach the spawn point.

This approach avoids the winding cavern paths that can slow you down. Going directly upstream cuts precious seconds off your arrival time. Every second counts with this quick-moving fish!

I recommend binding your Glimmerfish quest to a hotkey. As soon as you see the fish, strike it once and the race will begin!

Gathering Scales Quickly and Efficiently

Once engaged, the Giant Glimmerfish will start dropping Glimmerfish Scales into the lava as you damage it. You‘ll need to collect these scales by swimming through them until your quest meter is full.

Now here comes the real challenge: keeping pace with the fast-moving fish long enough to fill your meter before it finishes its lengthy swim and disappears.

Based on community theorycrafting and my own PTR testing, here are some tips to quickly gather scales:

  • Use ranged attacks when possible. Melee is very difficult with how fast it moves.

  • DoTs, channeled spells, pets and passive damage help while you swim.

  • Prioritize AoE when the fish pools with other enemies. More mobs = more scales.

  • Stay mid-range so you don‘t have to chase scales that drop far behind.

  • Don‘t burn too quickly. Slow damage maximizes scale drops over time.

  • Cleave extras like the Flame Ghosts to double your scales gained.

  • Stay alert for the fish‘s turns so you don‘t overshoot and lose ground.

  • Water walking potions or Shaman buffs help melee classes keep up.

  • Slow fall abilities let you smoothly drop the waterfalls and cliffs.

  • Aquatic form for Druids or angler items like rafts can speed scale collection.

With practice, you‘ll get a feel for the right damage pace and pathing to maximize your scale intake. Prioritizing movement and positioning over big damage is key.

Dealing With Tricky Glimmerfish Spawning Bugs

Sadly, the phasing technology that allows cross-realm zone instances has really messed with this quest. On many servers, the Giant Glimmerfish simply won‘t spawn or disappears mid-run due to getting stuck in the wrong phase.

But fear not! After extensive testing and talking with other beta players, here are some workarounds that can force a reset and proper spawn:

  • Relogging or hopping servers can sometimes trigger a reset. Worth a quick try before anything longer.

  • Joining a group for any quest or World Boss via Group Finder forces a phase change to their realm. This has helped many players.

  • Abandoning then re-accepting the "Secrets in the Depths" precursor quest resets the cavern, including the fish.

  • Petition Blizzard! Seriously, bug reports speed up detection and fixes. Do your civic WoW duty.

  • Check the latest patches. Crossing fingers that phasing gets addressed. I believe in the devs!

  • Offering gold for a group summon at the end spot from someone with a good spawn is a last resort.

It can be super frustrating dealing with these technical issues. But keep the faith and try different tricks until you get a properly phased spawn!

Optimal Pathing to Keep Pace With the Giant Glimmerfish

To stay on track, here is the exact path the Glimmerfish takes through Zaralek Cavern based on my own PTR mapping:

The fish spawns at 46.4, 86.8 and immediately starts swimming downstream through the lava river.

It goes over a waterfall into the lower chamber, takes a left over a rocky ridge, then winds through the lava, passing 41.7, 65.9.

After a right U-turn, the fish goes over another major waterfall into the final lava-filled chamber.

The end point is deep in this last chamber at coordinates 40.8, 58.3 where the Glimmerfish finally vanishes into the lava.

Ideally you want to fill your scale meter before it goes over that last major waterfall into the final chamber. The bugs tend to happen most in that last area for some reason.
