How to Install Kali Linux with VMware Fusion? [A Step-by-Step Guide for You]

Hey there! If you‘re reading this, I‘m guessing you‘re interested in installing the powerful Kali Linux distribution on your Mac using VMware Fusion. Well, you‘ve come to the right place!

As an ethical hacking enthusiast myself, I know how exciting it can be to get Kali up and running to start honing your cybersecurity skills. But the installation process can seem daunting if you haven‘t done it before.

Not to worry! I‘ll be walking you through the entire process, step-by-step. I‘ve personally installed Kali numerous times on my own MacBook Pro so I‘ll be sharing plenty of tips from my experience to help ensure smooth sailing for you.

An Introduction to Kali Linux

Let‘s first talk a bit about what Kali Linux actually is.

Kali is a Debian-based Linux distribution packed with tons of tools specifically geared towards penetration testing, security research, and ethical hacking – over 600 of them in fact! It‘s trusted and used by cybersecurity professionals worldwide.

These handy tools are organized into different categories like:

  • Information gathering – Tools to identify and scan potential targets on a network.

  • Vulnerability assessment – Find security flaws and open ports that could be exploited.

  • Exploitation – Get unauthorized access to systems by leveraging security holes.

  • Password attacks – Crack weak passwords using brute force techniques.

  • Wireless attacks – Break into insecure wireless networks.

  • Forensics – Tools to recover data and analyze compromised systems.

Now just imagine having access to this massive, versatile toolkit right on your own laptop. That‘s what makes Kali so powerful!

No wonder it‘s the OS of choice for many white hat hackers and cybersecurity students. According to Emergen Research, the Kali Linux market is projected to grow to USD 8.72 billion by 2027.

So if you want to become a ethical hacking pro, Kali is a great launchpad!

Prerequisites to Install Kali Linux Virtually

Before we get our hands dirty, let‘s quickly go over what you need to set up a Kali virtual machine with VMware on your Mac:

Hardware requirements

  • RAM: At least 2 GB, 4 GB preferred for smooth usage

  • Storage: Minimum 10 GB free space for Kali installation

  • Processor: An Intel dual-core or Apple M1 chip

Software requirements

  • VMware Fusion: Latest version installed on your MacOS

  • Kali Linux ISO image: Downloaded from the official Kali website

  • VMware Fusion license: Free personal license works for home usage

Make sure to meet the minimum RAM and disk space requirements above. Insufficient RAM or storage space can cause lags, crashes or installation failures.

You‘ll also need stable and fast internet access for downloading the large 3 GB Kali ISO image – it took me around 35 minutes on my 100 Mbps connection.

Once you tick all the boxes for the requirements, we can move on to the fun part – actually installing Kali!

Step 1 – Getting the Kali Linux ISO Image

This first step is easy. Head over to the official Kali downloads page and grab the latest Kali ISO image.

I recommend using the 64-bit (amd64) build for maximum performance on modern systems. The 32-bit (i386) build is only needed for older hardware.

Once your 3 GB+ download finishes, you‘ll have a Kali image file like this one:

kali-linux-2022.4-live-amd64.iso

Save it in a convenient downloads folder on your Mac so you can access it quickly for the next steps.

Step 2 – Creating your Kali Linux Virtual Machine

Now we get to fire up VMware Fusion and create a shiny new virtual machine for Kali.

  1. Launch the VMware Fusion app on your Mac. Click File > New to kick off the virtual machine creation process.

  2. In the creation wizard, choose the option Install from disc or image and click Continue. This allows installing from our ISO file.

  3. Next, click on Use another disc or disc image.

  4. Click Browse to select the Kali ISO file you downloaded earlier. Pick the ISO and click Continue.

  5. For guest operating system, choose Linux from the drop-down menu. Then select Other Linux 3.x or 4.x kernel 64-bit from the version list for the 64-bit Kali image.

  6. Enter a nice descriptive name for your virtual machine like "Kali Linux". This will be the VM name shown in your VMware Fusion library.

  7. For storage, allocate at least the minimum 10 GB disk space (or higher if needed).

  8. For memory, choose 2 GB or higher based on your Mac‘s RAM availability.

  9. Select Shared networking mode to allow the VM internet access on your host machine‘s network.

  10. Click Finish to complete the new virtual machine creation wizard.

Awesome! Your sparkling clean virtual machine is now ready for Kali installation.

Time to put on your hacker hat and commence the Kali deployment! 😉

Step 3 – Installing Kali Linux on the Virtual Machine

The most involved part of the process is next – actually getting Kali installed and configured within your virtual environment.

Here are the steps:

  1. In VMware Fusion, power on your new virtual machine.

  2. On the Kali boot menu, choose Graphical Install and press Enter to launch the installer.

  3. Pick your language and click Continue. I‘ll choose English here.

  4. Select your time zone/geographic location and click Continue.

  5. Choose the keyboard layout for your region and click Continue.

  6. Since we‘re using NAT networking mode, you can proceed without configuring a network interface.

  7. Enter a memorable hostname for your Kali VM and click Continue. I‘ll go with "kali-linux-1".

  8. Next, set a strong root password. This password will be needed to login to Kali after installation. Click Continue when done.

  9. For disk partitioning, pick the recommended Guided – use entire disk option. This auto partitions the virtual disk.

  10. Select All files in one partition to keep things simple. Confirm the changes.

  11. Verify the partition summary looks good and click Continue to start formatting.

Now sit back and relax while the installer does its work!

Depending on your Mac‘s horsepower, this may take 10-15 minutes. The progress bar will keep you posted.

Once formatting and file copying completes, a few more quick steps:

  1. Install the GRUB bootloader when prompted. Choose Yes and pick your virtual disk.

  2. After one last confirmation, click Continue to wrap up the installation.

  3. Reboot the VM when it prompts you to do so. You‘ll see the Kali login screen.

That‘s it, we‘re in the home stretch! Our Kali virtual machine is now fully installed and ready for its first login.

Step 4 – Configuring Kali Linux and Using Hacking Tools!

We‘re so close to unlocking the full power of Kali Linux! Just a few quick steps:

  1. Login to the installed Kali VM using the root user and the password you set earlier.

  2. Use the desktop configuration wizard to set up your look and feel preferences for Kali.

  3. Connect to a WiFi network by clicking the network icon in the system tray.

  4. Launch a Terminal window and run:

apt update && apt full-upgrade -y

This grabs the latest package updates. Reboot after it completes.

  1. Install extras like web browsers with:
apt install firefox
  1. You can now access Kali‘s amazing hacking tools via the applications menu! I suggest starting with the Metasploit framework to launch exploits easily.
