Resident Evil 4 switched the series‘ formula in 2005 with faster action and over-the-shoulder aiming that modernized gameplay. As Leon, you must rescue the president‘s daughter from a sinister cult in rural Europe. RE4 Remake updates the visuals but retains the brilliant level design.
This includes challenging puzzles embedded into environments. Solving these with limited resources keeps you engaged during breaks between zombie dog attacks!
Where You‘ll Find the Cave Shrine
Leon‘s search for missing agent Ashley Graham leads him to a remote fishing village in Europe. After escaping the village and entering a labyrinthine castle, Leon finally reconnects with Ashley in the sewer tunnels underneath. Talk about a stench!
Fleeing the castle, Leon and Ashley take refuge in a vast network of caves. Unfortunately these are already inhabited by Novistadores, invisible insect-like monsters that swarm quickly. Not a great combo when traversing precarious cliffs!
It‘s in these caves that you‘ll come across the Large Cave Shrine, marked by a conspicuous stone platform. Activating it begins the puzzle, but first Leon will need to locate three hidden markings by thoroughly searching the area.
The reward for solving the shrine puzzle is the Apostate‘s Head item. This unlocks access to the church ruins, moving the story forward. So solving the cave shrine is mandatory!
Tracking Down Marking #1
The most elusive of the three markings is tucked away in a particularly dark corner of the cave early on. This one stumped me for a good 20 minutes!
As soon as you enter the cave from the giant maw-like opening, hang a hard right and move towards the cliff wall. Check the ceiling here to spot an engraved club or morning star shape. It‘s in a crevice that‘s tough to see into normally.

I cannot stress enough how valuable the lighter is here! You probably want to save it for boss fights, but use just a bit of fuel to illuminate the tight corridor. This marking is far too easy to miss as you run by.
With the morning star shape recorded, we‘re one third done with this puzzle already.
Locating the Second Marking
Compared to the first marking, the second one might as well have flashing neon lights pointing to it. But you still have to know where to look!
Moving deeper through the caves, you‘ll enter an area flooded knee-deep with water. Bats will likely pester you here. Check the ceiling at the back wall of the watery room and you‘ll spot the second marking.

This symbol resembles a U, V or rounded W shape. Make note of it before moving on.
Tracking Down Marking #3
As you go deeper still, a rickety wooden bridge must be crossed while swarms of bats hound your steps. Time your shots carefully as you move!
Just past the bridge, on the right wall, is your final marking. It stands out clearly once you know to look for it.
The third and final marking
Double check your notes – you should now have the morning star, U/V/W shape, and this last symbol. With all three found, it‘s time to head back to the shrine.
Solving the Stone Dais Puzzle
Retrace your steps through the caves until you reach the Large Cave Shrine‘s stone dais again. Interact with it to bring up the pressing prompt.
Input the three markings in this order:
- Morning star shape
- U/V/W shape
- The last symbol
If done correctly, the nearby gate will open and you can claim the Apostate‘s Head reward inside!

So in summary:
- Locate the hidden morning star marking
- Find the U/V/W marking past the first
- Track down the final symbol after the bat bridge
- Return to the shrine dais and input them in that order

Maximizing Your Success
Through much trial and error across multiple playthroughs, I‘ve discovered some useful tactics for smoothly solving the Large Cave Shrine:

Use the lighter frequently even when not fighting. The caves are pitch black in many areas so take advantage of any light sources you have.

Thoroughly sweep the camera in all directions at all times. The markings are intentionally placed off the main path and easy to walk by if you‘re not diligent.

Pay extra attention to ceilings and high walls. The symbols practically blend into the backgrounds.

You can recheck markings again if you forget the order. The puzzle saves progress after each correct press.

Don‘t rely on memory alone – write the order down! You‘ll be traversing a lot of ground between markings.

Save at the shrine after finding all three. You can restart there quickly if you mess up the order.
Surviving The Caverns
