Relationship Goals: Setting Up Monica on Docker
Monica is open-source software, so you‘ll need to install and host it yourself on a server. The easiest way is using Docker – I‘ll show you how step-by-step:
Step 1) Get a Docker Server
If you don‘t already have one, sign up for a Linode account and launch a new Linode instance. Follow this Docker install guide to get Docker up and running on your server.
Step 2) Configure Domain and SSL
You‘ll want to set up a domain name for Monica rather than just using your IP address. Buy a domain and point it to your Linode via DNS.
Then use Nginx Proxy Manager to generate a free SSL certificate from Let‘s Encrypt for your domain. This encrypts the traffic and allows HTTPS access.
Step 3) Deploy Monica Docker Container
Next, create a monica.yml Docker Compose file to deploy Monica:

- Proxy pass: your Monica container IP and port
- SSL: Select the Let‘s Encrypt cert for your domain
Once saved, you‘ll be able to access Monica at https://monica.yourdomain.com!
