First, what exactly is this new trinket? Ominous Chromatic Essence comes from The Forgotten Experiments, the 8th boss in the new 10-boss Aberrus raid added in the Dragonflight expansion. Aberrus takes place in the mysterious Shadowed Crucible location deep in northern Zaralek Cavern.
The raid continues the story of the Dragon Isles, with us investigating the black dragon Neltharion‘s experiments. Defeating the sinister bosses like Echo of Neltharion and Vexiona rewards powerful new loot, including Ominous Chromatic Essence.
This trinket is special because it provides both a strong triggered effect and a permanent passive buff when attuned to an Oathstone. The triggered effect grants a 20 sec buff increasing your highest secondary stat by 264 anytime you deal damage or heal. It can only occur once per 50 seconds.
Attuning the trinket permanently enhances one of your secondary stats as long as you have it equipped. This attunement system is brand new in Dragonflight and offers a ton of customization and power gains.

Defeat The Forgotten Experiments! Ominous Chromatic Essence has a chance to drop for eligible raid members. You may need to run Aberrus multiple times to get it.
According to Wowhead, Ominous Chromatic Essence has around a 35% drop chance on Normal difficulty, scaling up to 100% on Mythic. The raid also offers currency to purchase a specific piece of gear each week. So even if the trinket doesn‘t drop, you‘ll gain progress each run.
How to Attune Ominous Chromatic Essence

With the trinket equipped or in your bags, right-click it or use the /use command to activate it while standing near the Oathstone. A channeling animation will play, and then the trinket is permanently attuned to that Oathstone‘s bonus stat!
You can freely change the attunement too – just repeat the process at a different Oathstone. It‘s a good idea to pick the stat that synergizes best with your class and spec.

First, make sure to attune it to your most important secondary stat. As a Frost Mage, I‘ll be attuning to Critical Strike at the Emerald Oathstone for huge boosts to my critical damage.
Next, use Ominous Chromatic Essence together with your major cooldowns. Since the on-use effect buffs your highest secondary stat, you want to use it during your big damage or healing windows. As a Mage, I‘ll use it with Icy Veins to boost my critical chance and damage even further.
