Lost Ark is the action MMORPG taking the world by storm, with millions of players across North America, Europe, and beyond hooked on its engaging gameplay and addictive progression system. However, for gamers in South East Asia, Lost Ark‘s closed regional rollout has been a major disappointment.
Don‘t fret my SEA friends – with this comprehensive guide, you‘ll be sailing the seas of Arkesia in no time. I‘ve been playing LA religiously since launch, and have become an expert on bypassing its region locks using VPNs.
So join me on this quest as we conquer Hope Island from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and more!
An Introduction to Lost Ark – The ARPG Phenomenon
Let‘s start with a quick glimpse of why exactly Lost Ark is creating such a frenzy globally. At its core, it‘s an isometric action RPG or "Diablo-like" game, with a top-down camera and WASD movement controls. You choose from 15 unique classes, grouped into Warriors, Martials Artists, Gunners, Mages, Assassins, and Specialists.
After picking your playstyle, you‘re thrown into the lush, vibrant open world of Arkesia. Questing, exploring dungeons, and battling hordes of creative enemies quickly hooks you in. Combat especially is a highlight – flashy skills, impactful animations, and challenging bosses keep you glued to the screen.
Crafting the perfect build by combining tripods, gems, card sets, and more then keeps you grinding. Throw in collectibles, professions, sailing, and PvP to round out the content.
Still, the x-factor behind Lost Ark‘s meteoric success is its ridiculously high production quality. Developed by Korea‘s Smilegate RPG over 7+ years, no expense was spared. The Unreal 3 engine powers jaw-dropping visual fidelity. A sweeping orchestral soundtrackbacked by a star Korean voice cast brings the world to life.
Cinematic cutscenes and detailed quests make exploring Arkesia feel like you‘re in a AAA single-player RPG. Simply put, Lost Ark redefines polish in the ARPG genre.
Now let‘s look at some mind-blowing statistics:
-
1.3 million+ concurrent players on Steam at launch, 2nd only to PUBG
-
Peaked at over 1.5 million concurrent users in its first week
-
Consistently among the Top 3 games by player count in 2025
-
Over 50 million downloads globally as of April 2022
-
$1 billion in total revenue, including over $400 million from Western regions
With these incredible figures, Lost Ark has cemented itself as one of the biggest gaming phenomena recently. No wonder so many of us in SEA desperately want to join the hype!
The Frustrating Lack of SEA Servers
Now to the bad news…Lost Ark is fully inaccessible in South East Asia at the moment, as publisher Amazon Games does not have publishing rights for the region yet.
SEA was notably absent from Lost Ark‘s launch regions, which included:
- North America (NA) – February 2022
- Europe (EU) – March 2022
- South America (SA) – April 2022
Understandably, SEA fans felt slighted, having to watch streams and videos of the game without any way to play it themselves. The only official response has been a Twitter post from the Lost Ark account, stating:
"…we currently do not have plans to add an Oceania or Southeast Asia region to Lost Ark."
So for the foreseeable future, no SEA servers or publishing seems imminent. However, this guide will teach you how to bypass region restrictions and join Lost Ark anyway!
Step 1 – Choosing the Best VPN for Lost Ark
The first step to playing LA from SEA is signing up for a VPN – a Virtual Private Network service. This allows you to mask your real SEA location and appear anywhere in the world.
By connecting to VPN servers in NA or EU, you can access Lost Ark as if you were actually in those regions. So what should you look for in a gaming VPN?
Key Factors for a Good Lost Ark VPN:
-
Low latency – minimal ping and lag when gaming from long distances
-
High speeds – fast enough bandwidth to download and update huge game files
-
Reliability – stable connections without jitter or throttling
-
Unlimited data – no restrictive caps that can limit gaming time
-
Allowed on Steam – not blocked by the Steam store or servers
-
Budget options – cheaper plans or even free servers to test out
Based on the criteria above, here are my top recommendations:
ExpressVPN
With blazing fast speeds, low pings, unlimited data on all servers, and a reliable network, ExpressVPN is arguably the top choice for Lost Ark. The downside is the higher subscription cost.
NordVPN
Nord balances speed and budget well, with good discounts when signing up for longer terms. Very reliable too.
Windscribe
A nice free option for getting started – provides 10GB monthly data on their US and EU servers. Allows testing Lost Ark out before paying.
Step 2 – Connecting to NA or EU through the VPN
Once signed up, install your selected VPN‘s app on your computer. Open the app, and connect to a server in either North America or Europe – whichever region gives you the lowest ping.
I‘d suggest trying these locations first:
-
For NA – East Coast or Midwest USA, Ontario or Quebec in Canada
-
For EU – London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris, or Northern Europe
Double check your new IP address and location to confirm the VPN is active.
Step 3 – Downloading Lost Ark through Steam‘s Website
Here‘s an important tip – you cannot use Steam‘s desktop app to download Lost Ark, as it blocks VPNs. Instead head to store.steampowered.com on your web browser.
With your VPN running, search for Lost Ark and click "Play Game". Purchase the Founder‘s Pack if you wish, or download the free base version.
When prompted, choose "Yes, Steam is already installed" to send the game files to your Steam app. The download may take a while depending on your connection.
Step 4 – Launching and Playing Smoothly from SEA
Once installed, Lost Ark will appear in your Steam library ready to play! Launch it while connected to your NA/EU VPN server in the background.
I recommend setting your VPN app to auto-connect on boot, so you never disconnect while in-game.
Now let‘s go over some expert tips to reduce ping and latency issues:
-
Try different VPN protocols like OpenVPN or Wireguard to see which works better for you
-
Connect to VPN servers closer to SEA – EU ones tend to have lower latency
-
Use VPNs designed for gaming like ExitLag or Mudfish that optimize routes
-
Enable "Force TCP" in the Steam settings to stabilize connections
-
If speeds are very slow, upgrade to a paid VPN plan with priority access
With the right settings, you can comfortably play Lost Ark from SEA with a ping of 150-250ms. Very playable for all but the most competitive PvPers.
Advanced Options for Min-Maxing Your Connection
For our tech gurus seeking the smoothest possible Lost Ark experience from SEA, here are some more advanced tactics you can try:
Multi-hop VPN Chains
By connecting to a VPN server, and then to another VPN from there, you can significantly lower pings. For example, connect to a Japan VPN first, then to a USA VPN. Test different combinations.
Gaming Accelerators
Paid services like Mudfish and ExitLag further optimize routing by tunneling game traffic, reducing ping spikes. Also try services like Killping and Pingzapper.
Residential Proxies
Expensive but powerful option – route your traffic through residential IP addresses in NA/EU for speeds even faster than VPNs.
Free Public VPNs
In a pinch, try free public VPNs like Betternet and Windscribe to get started, then switch to a paid service for best performance.
The Future – Official Lost Ark SEA Servers?
While the VPN workarounds above work fine for now, Lost Ark fans in South East Asia continue to request dedicated SEA servers. Pinging across continents inevitably causes latency and stability issues.
The clamor for an SEA release continues to grow as the game‘s popularity skyrockets globally. However, Lost Ark developers Smilegate and publishers Amazon have remained silent regarding launch plans.
Expanding to new regions comes down to licensing rights, which Amazon currently does not have for publishing in SEA. We can hope they are working on a deal behind the scenes.
Until official servers emerge, this guide should help every aspiring Arkesian in SEA sail the oceans with their fellow North American and European aventurers! See you on the high seas my friends.
