How to Complete the Researchers Under Fire Quest in World of Warcraft: Dragonflight

As a hardcore WoW player and gaming guide writer, Researchers Under Fire is one of my favorite new daily quests in Dragonflight. Located deep in Zaralek Cavern, it‘s a fun mini-dungeon experience with meaningful rewards.

In this comprehensive 2800+ word guide, I‘ll cover everything you need to know to complete Researchers Under Fire like a pro. You‘ll learn detailed strategies and abilities to use, get tips for the final boss, see a reward analysis, and more. Time to delve into the nitty gritty!

What is the Researchers Under Fire Quest?

Added in the recent Dragonflight content update, Researchers Under Fire sends you into Zaralek Cavern to help some stranded researchers fend off attacking forces.

You‘ll battle through waves of enemies like Sundered Flame mobs, Titan constructs, and eventually take down the rare elite Captain Reykal. It‘s a challenging quest that takes most players 10-15 minutes to complete.

Finishing Researchers Under Fire rewards gold, XP, reputation, and your choice of the powerful Researcher‘s Gift buff or crafting materials. It‘s absolutely worth doing on your max level Dragonflight characters for the rewards and fun factor.

Below I‘ll cover how to pick up, progress through, and turn in Researchers Under Fire in detail. Let‘s get started!

Accepting the Researchers Under Fire Quest

First, head to Zaralek Cavern in northeast Waking Shores. You‘ll find the quest giver Rannan at coordinates (50.2, 61.8) – I recommend setting a TomTom waypoint:

/way Waking Shores 50.2 61.8 Rannan

Speak to Rannan and accept the Researchers Under Fire quest. He‘ll explain that researchers are trapped further in the caverns and need your help fending off attackers.

Rannan will mark a few spots on your map where you need to fight off enemy forces. Make sure these are showing properly before moving on.

Why Complete Researchers Under Fire?

Here are some key reasons you‘ll want to complete this daily quest:

  • Rewards a item level 410 piece of gear
  • Grants 500-1000 reputation with Loamm Niffen faction
  • Provides gold and XP
  • Unlocks access to weekly Zaralek Cavern quest for more loot
  • Fun, challenging solo scenario experience

If you‘re max level, Researchers Under Fire is absolutely worth doing at least once for the gear and to unlock the weekly. The quest takes 10-15 minutes so it‘s quick and rewarding.

Alright, let‘s get into how to actually complete the quest!

Defeating the Enemy Forces

The next step is working your way through Zaralek Cavern and defeating all the marked forces. Here are the enemies you‘ll face in order:

  1. Western patrol
  2. Southern patrol
  3. Northern patrol
  4. Titan forces
  5. Titan forces response team
  6. Watcher
  7. Sundered Flame forces
  8. Lieutenant Narlena
  9. More Sundered Flame forces

Make sure to clear each group fully as you progress so they don‘t aggro you from behind.

I recommend using strong AoE abilities when engaging multiple mobs. Some good class-specific AoEs to leverage are:

  • Death Knight – Death and Decay
  • Demon Hunter – Eye Beam
  • Druid – Sunfire and Swipe
  • Mage – Blizzard and Arcane Explosion
  • Monk – Spinning Crane Kick
  • Paladin – Consecration
  • Priest – Holy Nova
  • Rogue – Fan of Knives
  • Shaman – Chain Lightning
  • Warlock – Rain of Fire
  • Warrior – Whirlwind

Burn down the lieutenants and elites like Narlena more slowly using your hard-hitting single target abilities. Save defensive cooldowns, health pots, and interrupts for these dangerous mobs.

Alright, now let‘s go through each enemy type you‘ll face and strategies to beat them:

Western Patrol

The western patrol consists of 3 Zaralek Spellscales. They cast Fireball and have about 80k health each.

Pull them together and AoE them down. Interrupt any Fireballs you can, especially on your healer if you‘re in a group.

Southern Patrol

The southern patrol has 3 Zaralek Beastbreakers. These mobs have a Cudgel Smash attack that hits hard.

Again, gather up the Beastbreakers and cleave them down with AoEs while using defensives. Stop any Cudgel Smashes you can with interrupts like Kick, Pummel, etc.

Northern Patrol

You‘ll find 2 Zaralek Beastcallers here. They summon a Saurok Brute pet and cast Serpent Strike.

Focus on burning down the Beastcallers first while dodging Serpent Strikes. Then mop up the Saurok Brutes. Interrupt any Serpent Strikes on your healer.

Titan Forces

This group consists of 3 Sparkweaver Mechanics. They cast a painful Static Shock ability.

Same strategy – gather up and AoE them down while stopping Static Shocks. Use stuns and disorients to interrupt casts.

Titan Forces Response Team

The response team has a Waveforged Seer, Waveforged Colossus, and Waveforged Demolisher.

The Seer will heal so focus it down first. Dodge the Colossus‘ Clap ability and the Demolisher‘s boulders. Interrupt the Seer‘s heals then cleave them down.

Watcher

This mini-boss is an Observer Watcher with 207k health. It casts Beam Barrage which can quickly kill you.

Use big defensive cooldowns here and dodge the Beam Barrage. Stop casts with stuns and interrupts when possible. Save large offensive cooldowns to burn it down faster.

Sundered Flame Forces

You‘ll face a Sundered Flamebringer, Flamecaller, and Flameguard. The Flamebringer has an AoE Burn to watch out for.

Focus the Flamecaller, then Flamebringer, then Flameguard. Dodge flame patches on the ground and dispel the nasty Flame Infusion DoT if you can.

Lieutenant Narlena

Narlena is a elite mob with ~140k health. She casts Massive Stomp for heavy damage.

Use big defensives here and kite if needed. Stop her casts and burn her down. Don‘t get greedy staying in melee range or the Stomps will crush you.

More Sundered Flame Forces

Finish off with another Flamecaller, Flameguard, and Flamebringer pack. Use the same strategy as before.

Alright, that covers all the regular enemies! Now it‘s time for the big finale against Captain Reykal.

Tactics for Defeating Captain Reykal

After clearing the other forces, Captain Reykal will finally spawn at (48.9, 58.1). He‘s a rare elite with around 155,000 health.

Reykal has two major abilities to watch out for:

  • Cavernous Smash – Stuns and deals nature damage
  • Sundering Stomp – Knocks back and deals nature damage

He also auto attacks quite hard, so don‘t underestimate his damage.

Here are some tips for defeating Captain Reykal:

  • Use major defensive cooldowns like Shield Wall, Fortifying Brew, etc.
  • Stop or dodge his Cavernous Smash and Sundering Stomp casts
  • Kite Reykal in a circle around the room to avoid his attacks
  • Self-heal and use health potions to stay alive
  • Burn him down steadily with your hard-hitting rotation

I don‘t recommend trying to burst Reykal down – he has too much health for that. Instead, take your time and wittle him down while managing defensives, avoiding casts, and self-healing.

The key is staying mobile and not getting greedy by trying to slog it out in melee range. Reykal will crush you with his 150k+ health pool and hard-hitting stomps if you do that.

Be patient, stick to your rotation, avoid the bad, and he‘ll go down like any other rare elite. It just takes time given his large health pool. You got this!

Turning In the Researchers Under Fire Quest

Once Reykal is down, head back out of the cavern to turn the quest in to Rannan. He can be found at coordinates (50.2, 61.8) where you originally picked it up.

Turning in Researchers Under Fire rewards:

  • 800-1600g gold
  • Item level 410 gear piece (ilvl 416 upgraded)
  • 500-1000 reputation with Loamm Niffen faction
  • Access to a weekly Zaralek Cavern quest for more loot

The weekly quest, Dousing the Flames, has you battle through trash and re-kill Captain Reykal. It awards a Zealous Equipment Cache with a item level 430-445 piece of gear the first time you complete it each week.

So Researchers Under Fire leads to even more rewards! Complete it at least once on your max level character to unlock Dousing the Flames.

You‘ll also get to choose between two different quest rewards when turning Researchers Under Fire in:

Researcher‘s Gift vs Researcher‘s Scrounged Goods

Researcher‘s Gift provides a 20 minute buff called Knowledge of the Past that grants 10% primary stat. This is great for pushing high keys or raids.

Researcher‘s Scrounged Goods contains crafting mats and gold. Here‘s an example of what you might get:

  • 15 Umbral Scute
  • 10 Luminous Flux
  • 8 Shrouded Cloth
  • 600 gold

So which should you choose? Here‘s a comparison:

Reward Pros Cons
Researcher‘s Gift Powerful +10% primary stat buff for 20 minutes Temporary benefit
Researcher‘s Scrounged Goods Useful crafting materials worth 500-2000g Less exciting

I personally like going with Researcher‘s Gift on my main as the stat buff has come in handy for raiding and Mythic+ pushing. But the crafting materials are nice too if you want to stock up. Choose based on your priorities!

Either way, turning in the quest nets you solid rewards. And don‘t forget it unlocks the weekly for more loot too.

Dealing With Known Issues

Some players have reported bugs with Researchers Under Fire not completing properly after killing Captain Reykal.

Luckily, according to Blizzard CS Article ID: 337986, the developers have identified and fixed this issue. So it should be smooth sailing now.

But if you still have problems, try dropping and completely re-picking up the quest. Clearing your quest log and doing a /reload can also help reset things.

Aside from that, just make sure you fully clear each enemy pack on the way to Reykal. And confirm he spawned at the proper location before engaging him.

Recap and Closing Thoughts

Let‘s recap the key points:

  • Pick up Researchers Under Fire from Rannan in Zaralek Cavern
  • Clear all the marked enemy packs through the cavern
  • Use AoEs on packs and focus down elites
  • Defeat Captain Reykal by kiting and dodging his attacks
  • Turn in the quest and choose your preferred reward

I hope this 2800+ word guide gives you an expert-level understanding of completing Researchers Under Fire smoothly. Let me know if you have any other questions!

I had a blast playing through this quest on my mage and rogue. It‘s an exciting solo scenario that really makes use of your class abilities.

The rewards are awesome too. That temporary 10% stat buff from Researcher‘s Gift has helped push some brutal Mythic+ keys for me. And I always appreciate stocking up on crafting mats.

So get in there and crush those cavern creeps! Thanks for reading and enjoy the loot.

William Decker
