As an avid Discord user and streamer, one of my favorite parts of the platform is the ability to customize your profile with cool avatar pictures. But did you know you can also save any user‘s profile picture to use or collect?

In this comprehensive guide, I‘ll show you how to easily save Discord profile pictures in high resolution. I‘ll provide detailed steps, examples, tips, and tricks from my own experience grabbing awesome profile pics from Discord servers over the years.

Trust me, after reading this guide, you‘ll be a Discord profile picture saving expert ready to snag any awesome avatar you see!

Why Would You Want to Save Someone Else‘s Profile Picture?

Before we get into the steps, let‘s discuss why saving profile pics is so popular in the Discord community.

Discord now has over 150 million active users. With so many people on the platform, there are tons of great custom profile pictures out there waiting to be collected!

Here are some of the main reasons gamers like myself want to save Discord profile pics:

  • Using as your own profile picture – If you see an awesome avatar someone else created, saving it allows you to upload it and use it as your own custom profile picture. Just make sure you aren‘t impersonating the original user.

  • Collecting unique avatars – Some people enjoy collecting cool and original profile pics as a hobby. It can be fun searching through Discord servers to find special avatars.

  • Memes and viral images – If a funny meme or viral image starts spreading on Discord, people want to save it before it disappears. Profile pics are a great way to find trending internet content.

  • Fan art and custom images – Many artistic Discord users create and upload their own fan art or custom drawn images. Saving these original avatars is a good way to appreciate fan creations.

  • Reactions and stickers – Unique profile pictures are perfect to use as personalized reactions and stickers in chats and comments.

As you can see, there are ample reasons to want to download a Discord profile image for your own use. But Discord doesn‘t make it easy…

The Challenge: You Can‘t Right-Click Save Profile Pictures

Unlike most websites and apps, Discord actually blocks you from right-click saving profile pictures.

When you right-click on someone‘s profile pic on Discord, none of the normal save options appear. This is an intentional design choice by Discord to prevent people from easily stealing avatars.

So how do you get around this limitation? The secret lies in utilizing Discord‘s developer console to get the direct image link.

Let‘s dive into step-by-step instructions on how to access the profile picture URL and save the image.

Step 1: Open the User‘s Profile Popup in Desktop Discord

Since we can‘t right-click save, we‘ll need to use Discord‘s developer console to get the profile picture image source. This isn‘t available on mobile, so make sure you‘re using the Desktop version of Discord.

Here‘s how to open up a user‘s profile popup:

  1. Launch Discord on your computer and log into your account.

  2. Join the server where the user you want to save the profile pic of is located.

  3. On the right sidebar, right-click their username and choose "Go to Profile".

  4. On their profile screen, click on their profile picture to enlarge it.

This will open the user‘s popped-out profile view which includes a bigger version of their avatar.

Now we can utilize the developer console to inspect the image element and get the URL.

Step 2: Open Developer Console with CTRL+SHIFT+I

All major web browsers and Discord have a "developer console" that lets you view and interact with code on a page. This is what will allow us to dig into the profile picture and get its image source.

To open developer console on Discord:

  1. Make sure you‘re on the user‘s profile screen with the enlarged avatar picture.

  2. Press CTRL+SHIFT+I on your keyboard.

  3. This will bring up the console – usually as a panel on the right or bottom.

You can also hit F12 or look in the browser menu for the option to toggle the console. The keyboard shortcut CTRL+SHIFT+I is definitely the fastest way though.

Now you have access to all the code running Discord, including the image URLs!

With console open, it‘s time to dig into the page‘s code and find the profile picture web address.

  1. Click on the cursor icon in the top left of the console window. This allows you to visually select page elements.

  2. Hover over the enlarged profile picture on the page and click it. This will highlight its HTML in the console.

  3. In the code, click the arrow to expand the

    tag surrounding the image.

  4. Keep expanding the nested

tags by clicking the arrows until you see a tag.

  5. Right click the image source URL found in the tag and choose Copy.

This copies the direct link to the profile picture file on Discord‘s servers. Now we can head to our browser and save it!

Step 4: Paste URL in Browser and Edit Size/Type Parameters

Now open a web browser window and paste the profile picture URL you copied into the address bar. Hit enter to load it.

You‘ll notice the image is quite small at first. That‘s because Discord limits avatar size by default.

We can fix that by editing the URL parameters:

  1. Find the "size=" parameter in the URL and change it to a bigger number like 512 or 1024.

  2. Also change the file type from "webp" to "png" for higher quality.

For example, a edited URL would look like:

https://cdn.discordapp.com/avatars/1234567890/pic.png?size=1024

With this simple edit, reloading the page will show the larger, better quality version!

Step 5: Right Click and "Save Image As"

Now that the image is the size you want, right click on it in your browser and choose "Save image as".

This will bring up a window to pick where you want to save the file. I recommend making a "Discord Pics" folder for easy organization.

Name the file something descriptive like "CoolProfilePic – DiscordUser" and click Save.

Boom! You‘ve now successfully grabbed that profile picture for yourself!

Advanced Tips for Grabbing Any Profile Picture

Through extensive trial and error grabbing tons of Discord profile pictures over the years, I‘ve learned some useful tips and tricks.

Here are my top advanced techniques for saving Discord pics:

  • For max size, try increasing it to 2048×2048 pixels if you want massive profile pics or banners.

  • JPEG compression works well for more complex images and photos. PNGs are better for logos and icons.

  • To save animated GIFs, change the file type from webp to gif in the URL.

  • For best quality GIFs, click through the frames and save each manually as a PNG sequence.

  • Change the URL size and format multiple times to get different results. 1024 PNG, 512 JPG, etc.

  • To save server icons and banners, right click the icon on the server list and "Copy Image".

  • If you want to credit the original creator, add their Discord tag in the saved filename.

  • Use IMGUR or other image hosts to upload the picture if the file size is too large for Discord.

With this advanced knowledge, you can customize the image saving process for any specific avatar or scenario.

Frequently Asked Questions About Saving Profile Pics

Here are answers to some common questions about grabbing Discord profile pictures:

Why does right-click saving not work?

Discord intentionally blocks standard image saving as an anti-theft measure for avatars. The developer console work-around lets you bypass this restriction.

Does this work on mobile?

Unfortunately no. The developer console used in the process is only available on the desktop Discord app.

What‘s the best size to save at?

For a crisp, clean image, I recommend 1024×1024 pixels. Discord allows up to 2048×2048 but the file size may be too large.

Is this allowed by Discord?

Technically there are no rules against saving profile pictures for personal use. Just don‘t impersonate or harass other users!

What should I name my saved profile pictures?

I suggest including the Discord username in the file name so you know who it belongs to. My format is "CoolProfilePic – DiscordUser".

Can you save server icons too?

Yes! Right click the server icon next to the server name and choose "Copy Image" to save icons and banners.

  • Animated GIF avatars are allowed, but have a capped frame and file size.

  • PNG and JPEG are the best options for avatar image formats.

  • In addition to a profile picture, users can also set a banner/background.

  • Paid Nitro subscribers can use custom profile banners, tags, and larger file sizes.

  • There are also "special" animated avatars unlocked by verifying email and phone number.
