When you first start, you‘ll have access to simple icons like the Overwatch logo. But most of the 100+ icons must be unlocked through gameplay.

Now for the good stuff – how to actually unlock all those sweet, sweet icons. There are a variety of methods, some easier than others. Let‘s break them down:
Battle Pass Icons
The #1 way to unlock icons is through the Overwatch 2 Battle Pass each season. Here‘s how it works:
- There are 80 tiers in each seasonal Battle Pass
- You earn XP and level up to progress through the tiers
- Free track gives you a few basic icons (around 5 per pass)
- Premium track has 20+ exclusive icons – but you must purchase it
- Battle Pass only lasts the season, so unlock icons before it ends!
For example, Season 1 Battle Pass has unique icons like Cyber Demon Genji at tier 38 and Neon Sparrow D.Va on the premium track.
The premium pass costs 1000 Overwatch Coins, or around $10. Worth it in my opinion for the icons alone!
Lifetime Challenges
Specific icons are tied to lifetime challenges for heroes and modes. Things like:
- Get X kills with Cassidy‘s abilities
- Deal X damage amplified as Zarya
- Win X games as a damage hero
Check the lifetime challenges menu see which icons have challenges attached. Make progress toward those you want!
Popular lifetime icons include Carbon Fiber Sigma, Jetstream Pharah, and Chronal Energy Symmetra.
Limited Time Events
During seasonal and holiday events, special event icons enter the mix. Recent examples:
- Junkenstein‘s Revenge had a Pumpkin Icon
- Winter Wonderland had a Festive Wreath Icon
These are unlocked through weekly challenges or special loot boxes during the event. Once the event ends, the exclusive icons go away, making them rare!
New Hero Challenges
When new heroes launch, they come with special challenges to unlock cosmetics:
- Kiriko had a Kimono Crest Icon as a reward
- Ramattra had a Vishkar Corp Icon available
Play and level up the new hero to unlock their themed player icons!
OWL Tokens
You can buy Overwatch League token packs and redeem icons of your favorite teams. 100 tokens gets you a home and away skin icon.
Great way to rep your squad! Currently 12 OWL teams have unlockable icons.
Twitch Drops
Sometimes free icons come from Overwatch 2 Twitch drops campaigns. Link your accounts, watch streams, and earn drops!
Many esports teams have icon drops. Also special promotional icons like the Overwatch League Community Hat Icon.
Gotta have Twitch open during the promotions to get them!
Direct Purchase
Rarely, icons get sold directly in the Overwatch 2 shop. For example, the Fist Bump icon is available now for 200 coins. Shop offerings rotate weekly.
The Overwatch 2 Watchpoint Pack also came with 2 unique icons and 2000 coins to buy more.
Legacy Unlocks
If you played the original Overwatch, many icons carry over after linking accounts. Things like league team icons, challenge reward icons, etc.
So if you see an icon you previously had missing, make sure your accounts are properly connected first!
